High performance sport has two features that differentiate it from other forms of sport: 1) in training, the priority is pursuing the best you individually and collectively, and 2) in competition, an added priority is pursuing the win.
there are essential individual and team mental abilities that high-performance athletes need to develop to a high level in order to potentially thrive in a high-performance sport environment.
the individual mental abilities are (in alphabetical order): 1) coachability, 2) desire to win (including competitive greatness and competitive maturity), 3) go for it mentality, 4) grit/resilience, 5) growth mindset, 6) managing performance anxiety, 7) managing sport arousal (how psyched up you are), 8) ownership of development (including mastery, process, and outcome goals), and 9) self efficacy/positive self-belief.
the team mental abilities are (in alphabetical order): 1) relational competence, 2) role acceptance, 3) role clarity, 4) team chemistry, and 5) team cohesiveness.
Through a variety of techniques and approaches sport mental training seeks to help athletes elevate their level of proficiency in the above-mentioned individual and team mental abilities.
